Hello! Welcome to Marketing With Mui. Now, if you're new to running your own business, you're going to love today's topic.

But first, if we haven't met before, my name is Mui Tsun and I'm a marketing coach for new online business owners. My mission is to help you create a crystal-clear stand-out marketing message that's easy to understand, so that customers know exactly what you're selling, how you can help them and why working with you is the natural next step. When you can do this, you'll have a steady stream of ideal clients, without feeling like you have to convince people to work with you.

So, say hello in the comments below. Are you new to running your business? I'd love to know more about what stage you're at.

So, back to today's topic, and this is something I hear very often, almost on a daily basis, and it's this: "I've just started my business, or I'm relatively new, and there are other coaches, or consultants, or whatever, who have been around much longer than I have. How do I compete with them? Who would want to work with me when they can work with them?"

Is that something that you worry about? Does it make you feel anxious, overwhelmed, or even intimidated? Does it stop you from taking steps to put yourself out there? Or question yourself "Who am I to coach, to teach, to charge for my services?"

First of all... I want you to know that that's very normal. I haven't met anybody who hasn't felt that way when they're new, especially in the online business world, where it's so easy to see how everyone else is doing and you start to compare yourself with someone who's been around much longer than you have. But today I want to help you look at things differently.

Think about why you follow someone: Chances are it's more about his/her personality rather than how long they've been in business. And here's what I believe: I believe that there are not really that many people out there with super original ideas or ground-breaking insights. But what happens is that each one of us takes an idea and make it our own. So, with your work and your offerings, you add your own experience, what's worked for you, how you've seen it work for your clients, etc, and you share that with the world. And, and here's the most important part, you share it in a way that only you can. And that's because you're unique. There's only one of you in this world.

From my own experience... there are literally tons of people out there who are doing something similar to what I do, who are helping business owners with their marketing, and sharing marketing insights. So, why do my followers follow me? Why are you watching this?

It may be because you're a fellow introvert and you feel a certain connection with the, hopefully, calm and relaxed energy that I'm putting out. It could be as simple as the fact that you're intrigued by my name, because it's unusual. Or you like what I've posted about our dog Polly. It can be simple things like that. Or you start listening and you quite like my accent.

Which reminds me, years ago when I first started, I was quite conscious of my accent because I thought you have to speak perfect English, or people are going to think I'm not professional enough. But then someone told me they actually like the way I speak because it's different and quite charming.

Another thing... again, when I first started, I thought that in order to succeed, you have to be an extrovert, you have to have that bubbly, kick-ass attitude. And so I actually branded my business to have that bold, bright and rockstar persona. But you know what? It didn't work for me because that's not me. That's not who I am. And as a result I didn't feel comfortable promoting my business. And it's interesting how that kind of thing happens at a subconscious level. I probably wasn't aware that I didn't market myself effectively because my brand didn't feel right to me. When I rebranded to be softer and calmer, to be someone with a quiet sense of authority, it felt totally aligned with my personality. I felt more motivated to promote my business and I naturally started attracting the kind of clients I wanted to attract. Think about it, people who are drawn to your personality will be naturally drawn to you. It's a no-brainer. Why would you want to attract people who are drawn to someone else, while you pretend to be someone else?

So, I hope this is helping you to look at things differently and given you the motivation to go out there and just be you. You don't have to compete with those who have been around longer than you. Isn't that liberating? You have the expertise and knowledge in your field, and you just have to go out there and be authentically you, without copying others, without pretending to be someone you're not.

OK, let me know if you've found this helpful. And tag your friends if you think it will help them as well. I'll share a link to my website so you think check out what I do.

And I'll see you next time.
